Stamford EMS Academy is proud to offer Safe Sitter®, to teach young teens in grades 6-8 how to handle emergencies when caring for young children. The goal of the program is to educate the sitter on how to care for children in order to prevent accidents, and what to do in case of an emergency.
Safe Sitters learn basic lifesaving and safety techniques, such as:
- What to do when a child stops breathing or chokes
- How to call for emergency help
- Basic child care skills, such as diapering and feeding
- How to entertain children and keep them safe
Safe Sitters also receive helpful tips to make them more confident babysitters and caregivers, and learn safety and security precautions, such as what to do if a stranger comes to the door and how to call for help. They also receive information on child development and age-appropriate activities, while learning about the business of babysitting.
During the course, participants get hands-on practice in basic lifesaving techniques including CPR and choking, so they are prepared to act accordingly in a crisis situation.
